What to Do During a Dental Emergency Before You Reach Us
Dental emergencies never happen at a convenient time. A tooth gets knocked out during a weekend soccer game, a crown pops off at dinner, or a dull ache turns into sharp pain overnight. Knowing what to do in those first few minutes can protect your tooth and ease your discomfort until we can see you.
At We Care Dental in Dublin, we reserve same-day appointments for urgent situations. Here is how to handle the most common dental emergencies before you arrive.
A Knocked-Out Tooth
Time matters most here. Pick the tooth up by the crown, never the root, and gently rinse it with water if it is dirty. If you can, place it back in the socket and bite down softly on a clean cloth. If that is not possible, keep it in a small container of milk. Then call us right away. A tooth has the best chance of being saved when treated within the hour, which is why fast emergency dentistry is so important.
A Severe Toothache
Rinse your mouth with warm water and gently floss to remove any food trapped between teeth. A cold compress on the outside of your cheek can reduce swelling. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum, as it can burn the tissue. Persistent pain often means an infection that needs prompt care.
A Chipped or Broken Tooth
Save any pieces if you can, and rinse your mouth with warm water. Use a cold compress to limit swelling. Even if the chip does not hurt, the exposed surface can quickly lead to decay, so it is worth having it checked. Many breaks are repaired with a crown that restores both strength and appearance.
A Lost Filling or Crown
If a crown comes off, keep it safe and bring it with you. You can cover a sensitive tooth with dental wax from the pharmacy in the meantime. Avoid chewing on that side until we can re-secure or replace the restoration.
